Illegal Chainsaw Operators Linked To Rampant Bush Fires

They said the chainsaw operators entered the forest in the night and in the process set fires to cook but left the fires unquenched and such fires spread to burn the farms and other properties of innocent persons.

The volunteers disclosed this when a three member team of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) led by Mr. Yaw Asamoah, the Technical Officer of the Service, accompanied by other personnel from Sunyani met their leaders and traditional authorities of Bomaa and Yamfo, both in the District at separate meetings as part of the team’s national anti bush fire tour of the Brong-Ahafo Region.

The objective of the tour is to inspect and assess the extent of damages caused by bush fires in the country since the beginning of January 2016 to date and also to sensitize the public on the dangers of the situation and its consequences on the nation’s economy.

The team had already toured the Volta, Eastern and Ashanti Regions and from the Brong-Ahafo the team would proceed to the Upper West and Upper East Regions.

The volunteers therefore appealed to the government for effective security measures to complement their efforts to protect the nation’s forest and its dwindling resources from indiscriminate bush burning and destruction by unpatriotic individuals and groups because of greed and sudden desire for wealth.
They asked government and philanthropists to provide them with logistics to facilitate their work and to protect them from all forms of risk in the bush.

Mr. Asamoah commended the volunteers for risking their lives for the love of the country by sacrificing in saving farms and other properties of the people from destruction by fire.
He promised that all their concerns would be considered to make their work easier and expressed the fear that that if immediate measures were not taken to save the situation, there would be so much hunger and poverty in the country.

Nana Poku Gyantakyi the second, Ankobeahene of the Bomaa lauded the efforts of the volunteers and urged the youth in other communities to avail themselves for such voluntary services in the interest of the people and the nation at large.
